Back To Training Basics!


Hi and welcome back to My Health And Fitness Today.

Firstly i want to apologise for the scarcity of posts of late. My excuse is the same as my lack of workout training too, let me explain; Last August my partner Zoe became ill, and after a month of her doctors arsing about and generally doing bugger all, i lost my temper and took her straight to the Accident & Emergency Department of the local hospital.

She was admitted immediately with a temperature of 40deg and a very low blood pressure, they told us that it was probable Colitis and that after 2-3 days of intravenous steroids, she’d be fine and able to return home.

5 days later and still no improvement, it was found that her body was rejecting her bowel and would need to be put on immuno-suppressants. This in turn had other implications and required further drug treatment to counteract the I-S’, finally after 12 days in hospital Zoe was allowed home. Sadly she was told that she would no longer be able to breast-feed our baby girl Isabelle, due to the massive dose of steroids she was on which upset her terribly. Unfortunately she was unable to breast-feed our first daughter Olivia, now 3yrs past the first week, as she really chomped down and caused major problems, so when she had got to 3 months with Isabelle she was really loving it and wanted to carry on till 6 months, this was not to be.

Anyhow, at home she had to take a whole raft of different drugs, steroids, I-S’, magnesium, and god knows what else, 29 pills a day, 19 for breakfast and the rest throughout the day and night, but even with all these, by the 7th day you could see she was beginning to go downhill, by the time her first checkup at the hospital at 10 days came around, she was really ill again.

As she was already on the strongest drugs they could give her, the only option left was to remove her large intestine. When the day of her operation came around, i spent an hour with her before she was taken to the operating room, she as gravely ill.

They told me she would be out within 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours and they would ring me, 5 hours later still no call, i’m going out of my mind with worry, fearing the worst, ‘How would i cope without her? What would i tell Olivia? All of this flew through my mind, finally after many frantic calls to the hospital, 5 1/2 hours later she was out and safe, though apparently it was a close call, and they admitted that they should’ve operated sooner!

So after a week she finally came home again, this time she managed two weeks at home before being rushed back in by ambulance, she had a massive abscess on the stump of her colon which was leaking back into her body, making her ill again, another operation, another week in hospital, another few weeks at home and…. her index finger blows up black and blue, another abscess, all related.

While she’s going through all this, i’ve been taking time off to look after the girls, run her to hospital appointments, pick up drugs etc etc… and with all the stress and worry, something had to give, and yes you’ve guessed it, twas my workouts!

Just when we thought she was getting stronger, last week she spent in hospital, again, fortunately this time it was only viral, something caught from a home help, but due to her reduced immune system, it hit her like a tone of bricks, hence the lack of posts.

Anyway, to get to the point (yaay at last…) i’ve just started training again going right back to basics using Craig Ballantynes Turbulence Training and to be sensible i’ve gone right back to the beginners workout schedule, which quite honestly still hit me like a freight train!

Before all the problems started, i was at a steady 13st 6lbs (188lbs) with around 15% body fat, not fantastic, i would never have graced the pages of Mens Health et al, but it was ok, i was fairly solid, reasonably muscly, and felt healthy. Now, well see my stats below, doesn’t take long to lose it, just five months;

Weight: 13st 9lbs (191lbs)

Body Fat: 25.4% (dear god)

Visceral fat:14 (1-12 healthy level, 13-29 needs adjustment)

Muscle mass: 39.2%

So i’m 44 yrs old, have an underactive-thyroid, am pre-diabetic (due to my weight gain years ago, i was 16st or 224lbs) have lost a lot of muscle and gained a lot of fat, so am i worried?

No, because i have the tools and the knowledge to sort this out, and quickly, how quickly, well we’ll see, and if anyone wants to join me on this, then please leave a comment below.

I will be using Turbulence Training mostly throughout for the workouts and Jon Bensons Every Other Day Diet 2.0 for my nutrition program, why these two programs particularly? Simple they both work! They are what are i used to burn my fat the first time, and successfully maintain that weight-loss too

I will be posting some pics, and maybe some video if i can snag a camcorder.

I Just Lost 11 lbs of Bodyfat… On Vacation!

It was the weirdest thing …

I mean, I’ve been around you know? I’ve had just about every body and fatloss experience you can think of… the good, the bad, the ugly…

… and now the really bizarre.

Here’s the story:

I took off on an 8-day cruise to the Caribbean. This was a “business” cruise (yeah, right)… and I knew there was no way to eat the way I prefer to eat. At least not ideally. After that I had to speak in Tampa Florida at a fitness summit, then off to Las Vegas for yet another summit meeting.

All-in-all I was gone for almost three weeks.

First thing that I knew had to go was my “ideal” dietplan.

That’s my “Extreme” Plan on the Every Other Day Dietplan…

There are three plans in EODD:  The Primer Plan, which is literally “every other day”. You get to eat your favorite foods within reason every other day or so on this Plan. It’s perfect for folks who ‘hate’ dieting because, let’s face it, anyone can diet-for a day, right? Right.

Then there’s the Lifestyle Plans. These are two days of “burn eating” followed by a day of eating favorite foods. Most people use this because it too is so simple to use.

Then for we athletes and fitness pros there’s the Extreme Plan. This is for ultimate bodyfat loss and muscle-shaping. I love this plan.

But hey… it’s a vacation. And so I decided to eat on the Primer Plan… remember, that’s every other day. So every other day on the cruise I had a small dessert (sometimes two), pizza, or pasta… whatever I wanted within reason. The days before I did perfectly, substituting my morning shake for egg white omelets with a bit of cheese and a lot of veggies. Yum! 

Within three days I had LOST more than 4 lbs… or about 2 kg. Pure fat… well, a bit of water I suppose, but mostly that stubborn bodyfat around my middle that’s the last to go.

What the heck was going on?

Wait… the story gets better…

I move on to Tampa, and then Vegas, and now I’m 11 lbs (about 5 kg) down. My jeans ALL require a belt, only this time it’s not a fashion statement.

Frankly, I’m as surprised as you may be.

But I figured out why this happened. And I want to share it with you so you can use EODD (or another plan if you want… but mine is the best… : ) when you go on vacation or take a break.

Here’s why I dropped the last bit of my bodyfat:

First, I was on a VERY large cruise ship. I knew my weight training would not be as intense (the weights were not that heavy) but I also knew I could just make it work… train a bit more and go for the “pump”… just a good, quick workout. I ended up training 5 days on the cruise without a problem (and only ONE day of cardio for 20 minutes… you see, you do NOT need cardio to dump bodyfat!)

But the difference was in the WALKING. The ship was the largest ever built… the size of 2.5 football fields. And I walked everywhere… on the islands, on the boat, even to every meal. Just walking burned off FAR more calories than my normal lifestyle, which like most of you has a lot of sitting down to it. ; )

Walking… my favorite “Cardio” to this very day.

Second, I took extra potassium, along with all of my Radical Fatloss Blueprint Supplements. I carried them all on board.

The two that really did the trick for me was the Aqualize (also known as Acquacil), only 1-2 a day, along with the amino acids.

Finally, I realized that I need MORE food than I’m eating now in order to increase my metabolic rate. Just a bit… about 400 calories a day more than I have been eating. Doing just that rebooted my metabolic rate and presto… 11 lbs of bodyfat and useless water is history. My abs have never looked better.

I hope this gives you some encouragement when it comes to being on the road or on vacation. With the right plan (like EODD and Radical Fatloss) you can actually improve your body…

… and best of all, I enjoyed every minute of my vacation! 

P.S.  An important note was that I made a decision not to drink on the cruise or elsewhere. I had one small glass of wine last night to celebrate with my largest affiliate and business comrade. He flew in from Israel just for this meeting, and it was the least i could do. Roei and I had a blast all day.

The reason drinking is a problem is that alcohol shuts down fat-burning for several hours… sometimes longer. But a glass of wine or two a week is not going to hurt you. I just made that one small “sacrifice” so I could enjoy ice cream, pizza (I ate four slices one night at 3:00am and woke up leaner!) and all the yummy food the boat had to offer.

So, my final tip:  Make a decision to cut out just ONE thing when you’re on the road. Alcohol was easy for me as I do not drink that much as it is.

How to Lose Pregnancy Weight


So you just gave birth to a stunning baby boy or girl, how exciting! I hope motherhood is agreeing with you. Other than the new bundle of joy in your life, I bet your wondering how you’re going to get your body back into the shape it was before your pregnancy. As a new mother, I’m quite positive that you would want to spend your time with your new bundle of joy than having to go to the gym to work off that baby weight.

After giving birth, it can be really hard to lose pregnancy fat. You don’t have to sacrifice your time with your new son or daughter to get back into shape. Here are some things you can do to help lose that extra weight without having to sacrifice your precious time with your new baby.

First things first, you need to watch what you eat. Due to hormones, your body during pregnancy before and after can go through many emotional stress. You will see some changes in your body after childbirth because your hormone levels are trying to get back to the way they were. Due to hormone changes, you will start to have all these food cravings. Your not eating for two anymore so you can’t use that excuse to pig out. You  need to keep your sugar levels in your body stabilize if you want to control your cravings. Eat small meals and frequently as the day goes by. You are more likely to lose weight if you eat five to six small meals a day instead of the usual 3 large meals we are all so accustomed to.

Secondly, other than the great benefits for your child during breast feeding, you can also lose more weight if you breast feed.  There is a really good reason why you gain weight during pregnancy. When you breast feed, your body lactates and you need that extra fat. You can burn up to 500-700 calories a day just by breast feeding. Another way to bond with you child is to breast feed, it is also the greatest way to burn calories.

Third, you can show off your new baby and lose weight by taking a walk around the neighborhood. Your neighbors and friends are probably all dying to see your new baby, so instead of having them come to visit you, why not get some exercise and put your child in a stroller and walk all over the neighborhood to show him or her off. Tale your new baby out for a walk to meet the neighbors. Taking a walk is a fast exercise for weight loss, it also help you deal with the stress of being a mother if you do this everyday.

Don’t forget it’s not crucial for your to lose pregnancy weight fast. You’ve just had a baby, your body has been through a lot. Try to lose weight as safely and natural as you can, for your baby’s sake. Don’t you want to start off motherhood as safe as  you can, for your baby by losing weight safely and naturally . Be patient and soon you will fit back into all your clothes before you were pregnant.

Ballroom Dancing Is Great Exercise


Hi, i hope you’re going to enjoy this post from My Health And Fitness Today. After watching the recent run of Strictly Come Dancing, what struck me was the level of weight loss amongst the celebrities, so her goes;

People still see Ballroom dancing as the exercise for the rich or the old.  This thinking cannot be further from the truth.  Ballroom dancing has gained wide popularity in the recent years and is a one of the best ab workouts you can find.

My Health And Fitness Today-Celebrity Fad Diets!


Hi and welcome back to My Health And Fitness Today. A bit of fun today, on Saturday i bought The Daily Mail, and in their Weekend magazine they gave their hotlist of…. Celebrity Fad Diets. So let’s have a little chuckle at what the rich and famous will do for their ‘art’.

Now i don’t know if there was any particular order of importance to this list, but for fun we’re going to present it as a countdown, so rolling straight in at….

  • # 10: The Purple Diet - Apparently Mariah Carey uses or has used this little beauty to hone her figure, which involves eating only grapes, beetroot and other purple foods 3 times a week… mmmm yummy…
  • # 9: Grapefruit Oil -  This, allegedly gives off a scent that represses your hunger pangs, and the bootiful, bouncy botty babe J-Lo never leaves home without a bottle to sniff on when she gets the urge to snack…. mad as a bloody hatter.
  • # 8: Ice Cubes – Yeah yeah yeah i know what your thinking, but apparently this is how Renee Zellweger dumped the fat from her stint as Bridget Jones… well this may not be as daft as it sounds, as all top fitness trainers should tell you, drinking plenty of water throughout the day is a must, not only to rehydrate you but to give you a feeling of fullness, so staving off the hunger pangs, so chewing on ice cubes will do ok depending on how many you eat, and the very act of chewing helps too. Not a lot of fun though!
  • # 7: The Breatharian Diet – Oh here we go, here’s a corker, all you’re allowed to consume is – hot air!? Based on extreme fasts practiced by Eastern mystics…what a lot of hot air, dear me do not try that one at home children!
  • # 6: The Cookie Diet – Involves eating four buscuits instead of breaskfast and lunch…. Depends on what the buscuits were, but going by the sugar, salt and fat content of most cookies i reckon you’d end up fatter than when you first started, no thank you!
  • # 5: The Baby Food Diet – This is straight from LA where grown women gorge on pots of mashed swede and banana to stay slim… I think you’d have to have the mentality of a baby to follow that one!
  • # 4: Ear Stapling – Claims are that having a staple clipped around the cartilage in the centre of your ear can also suppress hunger…. as well as make you look bloody ridiculous and in so much pain that you forget about food anyway, maybe i’ll try that on the wife first, now where is that stapler…?
  • # 3: The Raw Food Diet – Some stars like Demi Moore believe that cooking food destroys it’s goodness, and yes it does to a certain extent, so no smart arse remarks about this one, eating raw veggies like carrots and broccoli is a great between meals healthy snack, just don’t try chomping through a raw chicken eh?
  • # 2: The Cabbage Soup Diet – I think most people have heard of this one, devotees are said to include Sarah Michelle Gellar who swear by it, and yes you can eat as much as you want as long as it’s Cabbage Soup… my missus would leave me for sure if i tried this, Chicago would have nothing on me brother, know what i’m saying eh? Phew?

And finally in the number one spot for the ‘mad as a box of frogs celebrity fad diets‘ is # 1: The Master Cleanse Diet is said to have stripped the duty off Beyonces booty! This probably did work as you have to replace food with a mixture of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, wow! I think Beyonce should report to me immediately for a thorough examination and assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of this procedure…heh heh heh.. come her B…

Listen guys and girls, ignore all of the above, you DON’T NEED ANOTHER FAD DIET! You just need to start by making small lifestyle changes that will eventually lead to a big difference.

Most personal trainers and fitness gurus will tell you that you must eat six meals a day (every 3 hours) have you ever tried that? It’s hard, and eventually it gets you down, especially if you miss one, because you put yourself under stress.

I stripped my fat by eating 3 good meals a day with healthy snacks in between, such as apples and mixed nuts. This makes it much easier to follow, and it keeps your metabolism, that little fat furnace inside you burning away. Of course i exercised as well, to help build lean muscle which helps to burn your fat during your rest periods and sleep time!

Ditch the diets, change your life  for good!

Happy New Year from My Health And Fitness Today everyone, i hope you had as a wonderful Christmas as i did, now it’s back to reality….read on…

Well here we are again at THAT time. Yep, new year resolutions, and always the top of the list is ‘I’m gonna lose weight this year…definitely… absolutely… maybe… I’ll start next week when I’ve finished the Christmas booze, then I’ll start.’ So no doubt you’re on the lookout for the latest diet, or celebrity fitness video (geez get wise people) or weight loss program, but some are much more successful than others, take it from me.

Understanding what you want from a program, and more importantly, what to look for in a weight loss exercise program will help to make the right choice when it comes to your purchase.

The first question you ask of a weight loss program should be, does it target your specific problem or issues? The closer you can get to your intended goal the better. What I mean by this is, if you’re a 250lb man who sits at a desk all day, don’t go buying a book on fit mums! Ok that’s an exaggeration, but you can see what I’m getting at, the more targeted the programs solution is towards your own problem, the more chance you’ll have of sticking with it successfully and losing your fat consistently! Not all weight loss programs are created equal, and some are outright dangerous.

Next thing to check is, and this one’s really important, are you expected to starve yourself on a low-cal diet, if so, ditch it, look, it’s a fact that 95% of conventional diets don’t work. If you severely cut down on you calories, and I’m talking anything down to 800 or less for a woman and 1400 or less for a man, you will lose weight alright, but most of that will be from muscle, and that just ‘aint healthy, concentrate on losing your fat NOT your weight, muscle is heavier than fat, and if you build lean muscle you WILL burn more fat! If you try and starve your body, it will shut down your metabolism to protect you, and when you inevitably drop the diet, your body will store more fat from the food you eat. Just don’t bother with diets, YOU DON’T NEED THEM TO LOSE WEIGHT HEALTHILY!!

A good weight loss program should include a comprehensive exercise regime that combines both weight training with cardiovascular training (cardio). Also bear in mind the time they want you to workout, if they would have you spending hours in the gym doing bags of boring cardio, walking on the treadmill till you flake out, forget it, YOU DON’T NEED TO SPEND HALF YOUR LIFE EXERCISING TO LOSE WEIGHT!!! I don’t care how fat you are, forget it, move on. A top program should have a good workout schedule, which is easy to follow, and concentrates on building lean muscle tissue, as this is what will keep your metabolism burning fat long after you’ve finished your workout!

Finally, pick a program that’s exciting to read, makes you want to get cracking at it. A program that keeps things fresh, and evolves over time, and one that will be maintainable, remember, you’re doing this to change your life for good, and feel better about yourself, make it a lifestyle change!

All Diets Work–No Diets Work


Have you ever lost weight within the past only to regain it a brief time later? Have you ever followed every diet including Atkins, South Beach, the Drinking Man’s diet, the Peanut Butter diet, or perhaps the Chocolate Diet? All of those diets work, and none of them work, which means you can and most likely do lose weight on any of them, but you will not keep it off. Why not? As a result of the day will come when the diet is over and you are right back to your regular routine; the identical routine that got you fat in the primary place.

Within the past diets carried a warning not to remain on them longer than the prescribed period; typically two weeks, some a mere 3 days. Today’s standard diets are making an attempt to vogue themselves as lifestyle choices, however this isn’t operating either. Individuals wish to be able to eat a sandwich currently and then. They need the burger and also the bun! Attempt for balance choosing foods you like, and you may have a better chance at lasting weight loss success.
